India now a ‘Wave 1’ country for smartphone makers

Nokia launched its Lumia series of Windows Phone devices in India on Monday. Significantly, Nokia’s new flagship phones have been unveiled in India within a fortnight of its global launch. A year back it would have taken up to six months for a new smartphone to hit stores in India. Now, however most firms are viewing India as the driver for growth in the smartphone segment.

Industry studies suggest the smartphones segment in India will grow by 50 per cent at least till 2015. This could mean four years from now 70 per cent of all handsets in India will be smartphones — for the second largest mobile phone market in the world this will be around 700 million phones in 2015.

So, now you see all companies introducing their big ticket phones in Indian market as part of the ‘first wave’. The trend became visible when HTC organised a global launch of its Explorer in India late September. Earlier this month, Samsung brought in its Galaxy Note, again just a couple of weeks after its global launch. The latest to enter the race is Nokia. The trend does not end there. The Motorola Droid Razr and the latest Google Nexus phone are also expected to launch in India this month.
